Just more of the same craziness, y'all...

Holy cow, people, I am all turned about! More major reno going on in our kitchen, deliveries of cabinets, scheduling kerfluffles with the contractor, E-man is cutting more teeth...and now the Bubs isn't feeling well.

Wowza.

The Hubs and I talked it out, and I decided that I didn't want to spend our money on a dress, etc. for the ball (as in Marine Corps). It's not mandatory for him to go and we'd both rather have some time to ourselves rather than at a "forced fun" event with other peeps that I don't know.

I'll be blogging more later, but right now I'm watching the Steelers play the Broncos with the Hubs and I wanna hang out with my man!

This and that...

I finally got my new power cord for my laptop yesterday. *doing my happy dance* Of course, the first thing I do is hop on Blogger! The old one had frayed to the point of being useless a few days ago. I LOOOVE my Dell laptop, but putting the power cord on the side of the unit instead of the back is my only pet peeve with the design.

I don't have a cohesive post in mind, just a bit of this and that floating around in my noggin...keep the jokes down to a minimum, y'all!

Little E-man is getting longer and more mobile everyday. He now has 6 teeth at various stages of coming in. He's had his cranky moments (um, hours) lately, but we figure if we had that many teeth coming in at one time, we'd be cranky too. In between his more uncomfortable moments, I've been experimenting with my camera and light in preparations for my little photo session with the boys. I'm hoping to get some fun and nice portraits of the boys. Here's a sample of some of my "playing" as I call it~

The work on the house continues in all its dusty, messy glory. We go to purchase countertops and appliances this weekend...may the budget juggling commence! Fortunately, we talked to a very lovely sales associate last weekend who filled us in on all the upcoming sales/discounts. I coulda kissed her feet. But I didn't. Cause that woulda been weird.

The Bubs got his first report card of the year yesterday. He's doing great! I was concerned because he's already missed more time out of school than I would like, but he seems to be doing fine despite his sick days.

Well, that's all for now. I'm off to catch up on what's been goin' on in your worlds!

Everyday Faux Pas and Everyday Kindnesses~

There are just some things that people shouldn't say or do in certain situations (yes, I am including myself lest you think I'm gettin' preachy!) I've been witness to many faux pas over the years, some funny and some not so much.

When attending someone's funeral one should never say of the deceased, "Well, we knew it was coming..." I heard this a few times at Mom's services and I finally told one individual, calmly I hope, that yes we did know that Mom's time was probably limited but that didn't lessen the pain or shock. ~I mean, c'mon, knowing that a car is coming straight at you and is probably gonna hit you does not make the pain from the crash hurt any less. I'm just sayin'!~

When a child is caught smacking someone, hitting the child and yelling, "Don't hit" may not be the best way to get the point across. I saw someone do this while I was at the grocery store today. *sigh* It's sights like that that make shopping such a joy....

If one is saying hello to a person they haven't seen in a while, derogatory comments about their looks or how they used to be....not a good idea! I had a woman comment on how, um, voluptuous (my word not hers) I had become over the years and then said that it must be bad genes from my mother. Too angry to be diplomatic, I simply turned and left without another word. She got off lucky, m'dears!

I once had a lady say that my sleeveles blouse was innappropriate to wear while I was singing on the praise and worship team (the same team that my Dad led and my Mom sang on with me). A teenager at the time, I was totally bewildered as to how to deal with it and unprepared for some of the things she was calling me. Mom wasn't so hampered. She, in that deliberate way she had of speaking when she was riled, told the woman that if someone was turned on by armpits they needed professional counseling. I still get a chuckle out of that one!

Now, along with the many faux pas I and others around me have encountered, I've been privvy to a number of random kindnesses that were delightful to behold.

A lady that's become a friend of the family told me that she could tell from how our boys acted that I was doing a wonderful job with them. She went on to tell me that she loved being around me because she condsidered me to be a beautiful and genuine person. The compliment was totally unexpected and wonderful....and as usual, made me uncomfortable (I'm odd that way). I told her a quiet thank you. Thinking about that makes me smile and reminds me to pass the compliment along to others so that they can have a "warm fuzzy" moment.

I try to make it a point to look for those everyday kindnesses....the young child who willingly helps a sibling or parent, a person who lets the harried mother take their spot in the check out line, a compliment genuinely given...anything.

Have you witnessed or carried out an Everyday Kindness recently?

Look, Momma, I lost my toof!

The Bubs has lost his other front tooth...the last one to come out after the pre-school injury (pushed into a merry-go-round). We noticed that it was a little loose this morning. I figured that it would be ready to fall out sometime tomorrow.

Nope! The Bubs had other ideas.

For a couple of hours this evening I watched as he twisted, yanked, pulled, tongue-flicked and generally grossed me out as he tried to finagle that thing out of his mouth.

Finally, finally a pair of bloody fingers waved that tooth around in front of my face. I thought he'd be tickled with himself, but I think he was just relieved. I was too, honey! A quick phone call to his Ammah and Poppi to share the news, which was greeted with happy exclamations, and he was ready for bed. We'll do the tooth fairy thing tomorrow night. Hopefully, he'll leave it alone so his dad and I can pull the whole thing off...

Nothin' new to report...

We're finally seeing some sunshine around here after almost a week of clouds and rain. It's another "beautiful day in the neighborhood" and I'm itchin' to get out and enjoy it but I must stay the course and finish up some things around the house. It'll be worth it to have things finished before the Bubs and Hubby come home. I'm very protective of our time together in the evenings. It's important for us to have time together and not loose touch with one another in the weekly grind. I'm feeling more of a need for this since the Bubs has started school and the Hubs has been coming and going for work and I get the feelin' that they appreciate having that time in the evenings.

There's not a lot goin' on around here at the moment. The Hubs will be starting some much-needed leave sometime next week. He's already counting down the days and so am I. I'm sure he'll take a day or two and sleep in a bit, but after that we'll be going through the house with the purpose of decluttering and de-junkifying it. Whether we move or not, it's something that definitely needs doing. I'll also be able to see what baby stuff we have that's still usable and what needs to go. It's all put way up in the laundry room and the Hubs doesn't want me climbing up to take a gander...especially now that I'm pregnant.

So even there's not anything noteworthy goin' on at my crib, I know that by the time the holiday season rolls around, I'll be begging for a day like today!!

More to November than Election Day, Veteran's Day and Thanksgiving

Take a quick gander at my left sidebar......notice anything different? I've added a list of important and sometimes silly dates to remember in November (heh, I'm a poet and don't know it!).

Anyway, the spark of inspiration struck as I was flipping through a magazine and noticed a few whacky dates on one of the front pages like Button Day and National Egg Nog Day. I know you'll be shocked to know that I lost focus and started to wonder what other odd holidays were on the books. A quick Google search and I had me some results.

Some of the dates weren't that odd, but they caught my eye all the same. The Family Literacy Day and Parents as Teachers Day were among the first to catch my eye. Then I started cracking up when I saw that Use Your Common Sense Day and Election Day both fall on the same day! I mean, c'mon. That's funny right there. The Men Cook Dinner Day caught my eye, as well. I'm sooo going to try and celebrate that holiday....and calling for take out will not count!

Now, I have to remember to keep up with the monthly list but I had so much fun looking at this month's list that that may not be a prob....I think. Which days catch your eye?

Baby registries, showers and the loads of unwanted stuff that goes along with 'em...

Boondock Ramblings just did a post about going to a friend's baby shower. As the gifts were being ooohed and ahhed over, she mentally did a running commentary of the things the mommy-to-be won't really need....stuffed toys and such. As I was reading, I couldn't help but think back to the showers I had when I was prego with the Bubs. I had one at work and one that a couple of my aunts threw for me. While I appreciated both, I did get a few things that I didn't really need. There were the obligatory stuffed toys and extrememly bulky blankets that were far too heavy for where we live, but for the most part we were very blessed to get many of the things we needed. Like all first time parents, we needed everything!

Oh, and, mercy, did people take the opportunity of a new baby in the family to unload, er, I mean give gently used baby items to us. Or, at least some of it was gently used. It took me months to go through the lot of it! For heavens sake, there's not a thing wrong with handing down baby clothes and such, but PLEASE hand down in moderation and make sure it's usable. That way it's counted as a blessing and not a royal pain by the new parents.

Even though the Hubs and I aren't first time parents, we do still get a kick out of looking at all the baby sites online. Hubs is interested in the baby gear section and I'm usually interested in, well, everything. I'm still amazed at the sheer number of gadgets, toys, clothing lines and bedding designs that are available for babies. I go into overload if I'm not careful! However, I don't get sucked in by the diaper genies and wipe warmer type things. I didn't need 'em with our first baby and I doubt I'll need them with this one. Believe it or not, we still have a few things left over from when the Bubs was a baby so we don't need every little thing like we did before. (And the bank account breathes a sigh of relief!)

Some of my favorite things to use after I had the Bubs were my Boppy pillow, the silent mode on our home phone, one piece outfits, our tricked out pack-n-play (thanks Mom and Dad), burp cloths, the diswasher basket for bottle paraphanelia and, of course, the stroller/carseat travel system. Speaking of the carseat, the Hubs found a neat cover for it to keep the wind and cold out....you know, as opposed to bundling up the kid until he couldn't move. That was a great find and saved us a load of time and aggravation.

I think this time around I know what we can't do without and what isn't neccessary...at least not at first. For instance, I would love to have a co-sleeper to go next to our bed, a gentle noise maker to keep baby from waking up and a bottle warmer for those "holy cow what time is it?" feedings. On the flip side, I have no use for stuffed animals, no matter how precious, or a wipe warmer. My frivolous side isn't completely repressed, though. I'm in love with the little Trumpette socks that look like little shoes and the Babylegs products. I can't help myself, y'all!

And heaven forbid if you don't have a theme for your nursery! I didn't have a traditional theme for the Bubs like cars or frogs and it drove some people crazy. I made his quilt and the window treatments out of fabrics that I'd collected and had fun doing it. That was a memory that I wouldn't trade for anything. I just had an aversion to anything too cutesy or Winnie the Pooh. Sue me. Now I'm having a hard time coming up with things for this baby. I do like toile and vintagey kinda stuff, but that's kinda hard to come by (pre-made) on my budget. My Mom is prob'ly rolling her eyes and chuckling 'cause I've never had typical/easy tastes. I'll come up with somethin', don't you worry! For now I'm off to cruise the cyber aisles of babydom and get our registry goin'. You wouldn't believe how many people have already asked me where we're registered....

I've been tagged by Pokey

I've been tagged by the ever-so-lovely Kimberly from Hokey Pokey Life. Funnily enough, some of the random/weird facts that she listed for herself were very similar to what I probably would have written for myself. I'll have to rattle around in the ole noggin to find something different......here goes nothin'!

1) I have ADD when it comes to cleaning my house. I start doing one thing and then somehow end up working on something totally different. I don't techinically have ADD, I just - Oh, look! A butterfly!

2) Since becoming pregnant, Sierra Mist is my best friend. I tell her all my deepest secrets and look forward to seeing her after a long day.......okay maybe not, but there are times where it's the only thing I can handle after a bout of "morning, noon and night" sickness.

3) I am that girl who laughs at inappropriate moments/things when the room is otherwise deathly quiet, sneezes when there ain't a tissue within a 20 mile radius, and also falls spectacularly off of treadmills in a crowded gym. When I embarrass myself it's a go big or go home kinda thang! (On a side note~ My aversion to treadmills is so strong that I even refused to use one during my physical therapy last year. When I told them why, they snickered.)

4) I have two very talented parents. Even after almost thirty years, it still makes me uncomfortable when people bluntly ask if I'm as talented as they are. I mean, what would they do if I responded that , no, I have no discernible talents whatsoever and am as dumb as a stump? Of course, I don't do this but it's mighty temptin'! I need to come up with a more diplomatic way of responding that doesn't embarrass me or the person asking....Hmmmmmm....

5) I'm not good at coming up with diplomatic responses.

6) I absolutely love to make my Hubby laugh. I may not be alone in this, but it's true. I like making people laugh in general, but seeing my Hubby smile or laugh with me over some bit of ridiculousness is bliss!

7) I am always the one who, in a crowded restaurant, manages to get the seat facing the elderly gentleman who, after picking his nose, proceeds to hold up the loaded digit to the light and, um, inspect it. Yep, some people have all the luck!

Well, there you have it. Seven random and/or weird facts about myself. You have my sympathies! I'm not tagging anyone else as I always feel guilty that maybe the person is having a rough week and doesn't have time or....well, you get the idea.

Fall Weather and Gettin' Real

It's a cool and overcast day down here and I'm lovin' it! This is my kind of weather. I love this time of year when things begin to cool down a bit and the leaves are changing. This is also one of Hubby's fave times of the year, especially since he hasn't had a fall or winter in, oh let's see....about 3 years! The poor man, however, isn't here to enjoy the lovely weather. He'll be home in another week or so when his current assignment (in the desert) is over. The Bubs and I are missin' him something fierce!

On another subject, I think the "realness" of being prego is beginning to sink in. With all the major changes going on in our family, I allowed it to get bundled up and confused with all the stresses that were happening. Not to mention, I was in shock. I mean, I knew we were trying for another child but I don't think I was expecting things to happen so very quickly. Don't missunderstand me, I'm grateful that concieving went so well because for many other couples it doesn't. Again, it just happened so fast.

Yet, as I browse through baby sections, listen to the many excited exclamations over our news, and go through the day to day bodily changes that come with carrying a baby.....it's becoming both real and even more of a joy than I was previously seeing it as.

We're hoping for a girl. Well, I should say that I'm hoping for a girl and that my two guys are hoping for one of each! The last time that Hubby made a twin joke I think I tossed a shoe at him. If, by some quirk, we have twins I'll do my best to handle everything....but, honestly, one would be perfectly wonderful for me. ~I say, "by some quirk" because, as far as I know, twins don't run in the family.......I hope!~

"Oh, no he di'n't!"

Have you ever seen someone do something that you've thought to yourself, "Oh, no they di'n't!"? I had one of those not-so-fun moments this morning as I was getting the Bubs settled in his classroom. The Bubs was dutifully hanging up his bookbag when he said hello to another student that he'd told me the day before "wasn't his friend anymore". I know how the friend thing goes with children that age. One day they're inseperable, the next they hate one another. The Bubs didn't get this concept at all and was still being his usual happy, charming self. Anyway, the other little boy drew back his hand like he was going to punch the Bubs after he'd simply said hello.....that is until he caught me givin' him "the eye".

You know what I'm talkin' about when I say "the eye", dontcha? Uh-huh. I thought so!

I didn't say anything right then. The teacher was busy handling three other things and hadn't caught what had happened, but I know for a fact that she has a no tolerance policy on violence or any threatening behavior in her room. I followed Bubs to his seat to give him a good-bye kiss and waited for the other boy to come to his seat.....the one right next to my child. He smacked his lips and rolled his eyes at me as he moved his tray and chair as far away from the Bubs as possible. (Oh, no he di'n't!!) Well, y'all, I reverted back to my old teacher's assistant days and put a stop to that behavior.

I slid his tray and chair back to their correct positions and let him know that he needed to sit where the teacher had assigned him. Then I calmly -yes, calmly- let him know that it wasn't a good idea to hit people...or to act like he was going to hit someone and that I knew that the teacher would never allow that in her classroom. With huge, round eyes focused on mine, I could tell he was shocked.

"Oh yes, Baby, you neeeever know what Ms. Anna will see," I told him.

With that, I gave the Bubs a big kiss and told him to have a wonderful day. And then it hit me......Oh, no. I'm in another teacher's classroom that may not appreciate me doing that at all! Oy.

Come to find out the teacher was cool with it and followed through with the student as I was leaving. *whew!* Thank goodness, 'cause I thought I was going to be the next one in line to be reprimanded!

P.S. My prayers go out to those already affected by Hurricane Ike and those still in its path. If you're of a prayin' persuasion.....join me, Shugs!

Hanna survival and the coup-staging laundry pile....

Well, we made it! Other than lots of branches down in the yard, we came through Hanna unscathed. There were areas that lost power and reports of localized flooding and damage but for the most part, Hanna didn't rock the boat. Hallelujah!

As of this morning, I've had my first true bout of morning sickness. Yick. It came out of nowhere and caught me completely off guard. Thankfully, I was in the privacy of our home. I would have hated to be in the middle of volunteering in Dad's classroom when the urge to hurl struck! Double yick.

Meanwhile, back at the Bat Cave.......

I think the laundry pile is trying to stage a hostile takeover. Seriously. I keep hacking away at the pile, but it seems to be multiplying instead of lessening....and following me. I noticed a definite increase in the volume of the pile when Hubby got fed up with not being able to find clean items. Um, I kept telling the man that if he didn't put his items with the rest of the dirty clothes, more than likely, the stuff wouldn't get washed. I guess he finally believed me. Yay, me!

Speaking of Hubby, he'll be leaving for two weeks this weekend. I'm able to deal with his absences a lot better than the Bubs. He's completely undone when Daddy isn't there to hang out in the evening and then give him his goodnight kisses. I'm sure we'll do what we can to circumvent his bedtime routine anxiety with phone calls. It's worked in the past........

I've gotta run. I think the laundry pile has worked its way down the hallway and is peeking around the corner at me!

Sick days and Hurricane Hanna

After a pretty rough night of coughing, the Bubs and I are having a sick day. The doctor said yesterday that my little guy had a bronchial infection. After a loooooonnnnnnggggggg wait at the pharmacy we came away with albuterol and a bottle of antibiotics. I'm hoping that they do their thing quickly. I hurt for the Bubs when he doesn't feel good.

On to other things..........

So the big topic around here is the weather. More specifically, Hurricane Hanna and what category it'll be when it hits us. And then there's her annoying siblings, Ike and Josephine. May they stay out at sea! We all breathed a sigh of relief for those in the Gulf Coast area when Gustav hit at a much more reduced strength than had been predicted. Even though there was damage and the usual loss of utilities that happens during and after a hurricane, it was not nearly as overwhelmingly devastating like it was after Katrina.

Seeing the footage of the damage and watching the people trying to cope with being away from their homes and jobs brought back a lot of memories of going through hurricanes when I was younger. We'd all be glued to the weather station the week before landfall. Even my younger brother would want to know the latest details in between his game playing and Dragon Ball Z episodes. Mom would go to the store to stock up on neccessities, probably fending off wild-eyed women for that last jug of water or loaf of bread, Dad would get things secured outside and gas up the car while Aaron and I would gather things to take and tape the windows. The day before the storm was about to hit we'd load up the car with food, batteries and flashlights, things to keep us entertained, bedding and whatever else was needed to wait out the storm at Aunt D's and Gramma's house. We always headed there during hurricanes to help them out and because they lived a little further inland than we did. On the drive over we could already see the clouds rollin' in and the wind begin to pick up. Now the wind right before a hurricane has a very distinct feel to it. It's warm and humid and has a way of sounding like the ocean with the way it sweeps the pine trees around.

Then the storm would make landfall and we'd all settle in the living room and listen to the wind and rain beat on Gramma's little house. The t.v. would be the focus as we watched local reports and listened for tornado warnings. The next thing we knew, there would be a loud bang outside and the electricity would go out. The transformers on the power lines up and down the street had exploded. Out came the battery operated radio, flashlights and lanterns.....and the card games. Anything to keep two kids entertained, right?

Even though I remember my parents not allowing us near the windows during the worst of the storms, especially the eye wall which is always the worst, I do remember them letting my brother and I step out on the screened porch when things had died down a bit. Boy, it was something to hear the wind start miles off and barrel through the trees like a living thing and see branches and even pine needles sticking out of the ground like knives! Already, the buzz of chainsaws could be heard around the neighborhood as people began to clear away felled trees and other piles of debris. Miraculously, Grammas house -beyond a couple lost roof shingles- was never damaged. Our house, on the other hand, didn't fare as well during two particularly intense hurricanes. All told I think one end of the house was demolished by a flying tree that slammed into my bedroom and the hallway bathroom along with another tree that fell across the living room and lots of water damage. The overall frame of the house was never right after that and my parents would constantly come across leaks during rainy weather. Thanks Mr. Skimpy Insurance Adjuster Man.....you shoulda just totaled the thing, for cryin' out loud! It may have been just another mobile home to you (or "aluminum condo" as Dad called it), but it was HOME to us.

I remember those rides back to our house, when the roads were finally cleared, to check out the damage. The world looked like it was bent. Everything from signs to giant trees were at an angle. At first the car would ring with exclamations of horror over familiar sights that were damaged or destroyed all together and the forests that had been ripped apart by micro bursts. The closer we got to our house, however, the more subdued we'd become. The look on my parent's faces when we would finally see what had happened.......well, I don't think I'll ever forget the mixture of sadness, helplessness and then grim determination that I saw. Could you imagine seeing everything that you'd worked so hard to maintain so utterly beyond your help? It was mindblowing for me, personally. What was even more of a mental tangle was the fact that we had to, somehow, make it livable while it was fixed. I lived in the living room for a couple months after that, I think.

We got through it all with lots of prayer, tears and many generous helping hands and hearts. Now that the Hubby and I have our own home and family, I more fully understand what it must have been like for my parents. It wasn't just a home that was damaged, it was memories and their sense of security. Yet, they got through it all.....and got my brother and I through, too.

A Bit of This And That~

A Bit of This~
My cousin from Boondock Ramblings sent this my way! Thanks for thinkin' of me, Shug.

In other fun news.....the In Laws have left. My week of gratuitous insults and odd behavior is over. I feel like I've been run over by a semi...and then backed over just to make sure I'm good and flattened. Even my parents were witness to some of this behavior and were horrified. My husband was embarrassed. Poor guy. I continually told him that their actions were their own and did not reflect poorly on him. I mean, how could I hate on the man when it wasn't his fault? As much as I tried to reassure him, I still think he was disappointed at their actions. I was, too.

And That~

I had a nice conversation tonight with my Nana about the history of our family and the local area we live in. Sometimes having a conversation of any length with Nana can be hit or miss, but she was willing to settle in for a good chat with me. I enjoy hearing about our family's background (on both sides) and how it ties in to our area. I'm looking forward to seeing the pictures and other bits of paper that she's (and others in the family) have saved over the years....like a hospital bill for a two day stay that amounted to $65 in the 1930's.

Even when I was little I enjoyed looking through old photo albums that my parents had, the endless antique treasures scattered around Nana and Granddaddy's house, and looking at poems and very old family photos with Grandma while she told me stories about the people in them. Those are among my most fond memories of growing up. For Christmas, I asked Nana and Granddaddy to jot down what they could remember of their family tree. I'm hoping they remember to do that......Nana also said that she'd make copies of some old photos for me. As hokey as it sounds, I'm excited!

Bubs's Bedroom Makeover Update

Even though I'm not completely finished with the Bubs's bedroom, I thought I'd share a few pics of a few recent additions~

I love these metal stars! I like to use 3 dimensional things on walls when I can get away with it to make a room interesting. Thanks for letting me use them Mom....and for digging them out of storage, Dad!

I found this sign in a local pottery store for an unbelievably low price. I know the Bubs will grow out of it in a year or two, but I couldn't resist! Now all I need is a sturdier drapery rod so I can re-hang curtains below the sign.....

A Thomas the Tank Engine quilt. Hand-quilted by my Nana. The perfect addition for the Bubs's bed. Especially since the boy is obsessed with anything Thomas.

To go along with the Thomas quilt.....what else but a Thomas lamp?! A Christmas gift from Nana and Granddaddy a year or two ago, this may not be a new item in the room, but it takes on new life against the updated wall color.

Bloggy quirks and bad habits.....Confession time, Y'all!

I've been writing on here for a little while now and I like to think that I've found my personal style/rhythm. Along the way, I've noticed that I've developed a few quirks (bad habits?) when I'm writing my entries. Here are a few....and they're even in my favorite format - A List!

  • I use, commas, when , I don't really need, them and when I do I don't.
  • I misspell the simplist wordz. (Spellcheck? Nah! Why would I use that?)
  • Their~They're~There Those three words have always given me fits.
  • Odd and funny southern words (mommick, y'all, etc.) frequently make their way into my writing. I remain unapologetic about that, though. It's fun for me! And, yes, I really talk like that....
  • I write like I talk...that often means that "-ing" words are minus the -g. For example, I tend to do my bloggin' in the evenin'.
  • I've learned that it's never a good thing to blog angry. (Ooh! A new sayin' for a bumper sticker! "Friends don't let friends blog angry.")

There are prob'ly many more things that I could add to the list. As much as I don't mind pokin' fun at myself, I'm not a glutton for punishment so I'll just keep the list on the short side! D'you have any bloggy quirks?

It was either laugh or cry.......we laughed

Sooooooo.......the hubby and I were researching the area that we'll be moving to yesterday evening and ended up huddled together in a laughing heap. No matter what site we looked at for the local area there was no getting around the fact that it definitely had a, uh, rural focus. Don't get me wrong, I don't mind the country and even here am used to regularly seeing the odd tractor here and there riding down the road, but this was just too funny. Every single page had the local fishing report very prominently displayed and under the list of local events there was the beginning of huntin' season in big, bold lettering. My personal favorite was the ATV Jamboree.

Yep. Nothin' but helpless laughter at this point. Especially when I slapped hubby on the arm and wailed, "You are movin' us to the boonies!!" (Sorry, Cuz.)

And then to top it off, I asked where the closest Wal-Mart is (because I don't know the names of grocery chains over there). Hubby snorted and showed me that the closest major shopping area is at least 100 miles away. I think Hubs was laughing more than I was at that point.....

Yay, It's Monday! The Closer's On!

I LOVE watching the Closer. It's hands down one of my favorite TV shows ever. The new summer season started last week and has made Mondays worth lookin' forward to. The mix of characters from all walks of life and very different personalities fascinates me.....and since I'm a southern gal, I get a kick out of Brenda's down to earth, no-nonsense observations all with a drawled, "Thank you!"

The supporting cast is stellar and bring so much to the show. I like watching how they interact with one another.....stand-up guy Gabriel, Provenza and Flynn who always seem to be in trouble, the hot-headed Sanchez and the dry-witted, geeky Tao, along with the smart and beautiful Daniels.

The humor also keeps me coming back. I simply can't watch anything for any length of time that doesn't have a lick of humor to it. I know it's odd that I would say that about a show that centers around solving murders, but it's true. They even poke fun at the show itself. And any time they bring on the In-Laws, I know the hilarity is gonna roll! The casting people really found gems when they hired Frances Sternhagen and Barry Corbin to play Brenda's parents.

Well, anyway, you get the idea. I like the show and it's nice to be able to watch a truly entertaining mystery that I don't feel like I need to shower after watching it.

Having fun with art...

Well, I thought that since I wouldn't be able to get a pic of the big cabinet painting mock-up until Monday, I would post a few of my personal sketches that I have here at home. Before my teacher friend ever asked if I could paint her cabinets for her, I had been trying my hand at different underwater creatures in colored pencils and in watercolor pencils. Now remember these are rough sketches and not pristine final works of a professional artist! I just have fun seeing what I can do with different mediums. My favorite thing to work with right now are my watercolor pencils. I've never worked with them before and I've had fun learning how to use them over the last month or so. When I use the phrase "learning how to use them", that really means that I'm playing around until I find something I like as opposed to how they're supposed to be used in a traditional sense. What's art if you can't have fun with it?

This pic of a seahorse was one of my first attempts at using watercolor pencils....and of drawing a seahorse, for that matter. I remember being so tickled with how it turned out and having so much fun drawing again that I kept showing it to the Hubby every two seconds like a 3 year old kid! He dutifully told me that it "looked good" and shook his head in amusement when he thought I wasn't looking.

In preparation for my upcoming project, I've dusted off my brushes and acrylic paints. Now I have to fugure out which ones have completely dried out from old age and if I need any additional colors to go with an undersea pallete. Hmmmm....I wonder if Michael's is running a sale on acrylic paints?

Just Stuff....

I remember picking up a Calvin & Hobbes book at a book fair event in my middle school library. I flipped through, not expecting to find anything especially amusing and was caught by the humor and antics of the little boy and his tiger. I think the name of the book was Scientific Progress goes "Boink!".

I'd forgotten all about that book (by Bill Watterson) and it's characters until recently. My husband mentioned a fellow marine who had a really nice hardback collection of the comic strip series and I remembered how much fun I had reading those quirky and sometimes wry comics. Now that I think about it, Calvin and Hobbes remind me a bit of what my Hubby was prob'ly like when he was a little boy.......and still is!

So I'm taking a break from the Summer Vacation series (for what it's worth) and sharing a few funny strips that I've found on my random internet searches. I hope you enjoy them........and if you don't, visit Joanna or my cuz for a chuckle or two. I have it on good authority that they're funny ladies! (And I mean that in the best way possible!)
